For frequent travelers or digital nomads, a well-designed suitcase can be a lifesaver. These suitcases help you organize your travel gear and other essentials securely. When shopping for a new suitcase, I pay attention to the quality of the materials used and how others have reviewed the brand to make sure my purchase is well worth my money! Unfortunately, I know how difficult it is to find the right luggage. With so many options on the market, how do you know what brand is the best choice?

Monos, a relatively new brand in travel luggage, is already gaining ground on the market because of its wide range of luggage options. Monos seems like the perfect choice for a quality suitcase and a good option for budget travelers. But is Monos worth it? How does it compare to popular suitcase brand Away? I’ve reviewed the brand and some of their most popular options so you can make the right decision for your traveling needs.

What is Monos Luggage?

Monos offers a wide range of travel products. The brand specializes in creating luggage that provides classy designs and are packed with super-functional features. Monos focuses on simplicity, which is evident in its timeless luggage design. Monos' philosophy is to travel mindfully, exploring the world and taking in all that it has to offer. I found that this philosophy aligns with my belief that the greatest pleasures in life come from the simplest of things, so I give bonus points to Monos for this one!

Monos is also an ethical brand that outsources sustainable, high-quality materials to ensure its products last longer. Monos is certified climate-neutral and has net-zero carbon emissions. This makes Monos a great choice if you want your purchases to be cruelty-free, eco-friendly, and ethical like I do!

Overview of Monos Features

Monos luggage bags are simple and elegant, perfect for all travel purposes. The brand offers 8 stunning colors or two limited edition styles to choose from. These suitcases are made from polycarbonate, a durable and shock-resistant material. Polycarbonate hard shell suitcases are my go-to as I have found they protect my essentials (especially fragile items) better than soft-side suitcases. In addition, these bags are extremely easy to maneuver, thanks to their silent-run wheels and telescopic handle.

Monos also provides safety features such as strong YKK zippers and TSA combination locks that will keep your belongings safe. Every Monos luggage comes with an antimicrobial laundry bag, two shoe bags, and a vegan leather luggage tag. As someone who always travels with multiple pairs of shoes, I think the two shoe bags are a great touch.

Here's a quick overview of what Monos provides:

  • Polycarbonate hard shell
  • Focus on sustainability; Climate Neutral Certified
  • Variety of sizes and colors
  • TSA-approved combination locks
  • Strong YKK zippers
  • Luggage purchase includes a laundry bag, two shoe bags, and vegan leather luggage tag
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Free shipping for contiguous USA & Canada

Let's now talk about the Monos luggage ranges!

Monos Carry-On Luggage

Monos offers four models in the standard carry-on range: Carry-On, Carry-On Plus, Carry-On Pro Plus, and Carry-On Pro Plus.

The Carry-On is a great option for those looking for a standard carry-on bag. The Carry-On fits easily in overhead bins, with dimensions of 22" × 14" × 9", making it a great choice for shorter trips when you don't want to bother with checked luggage. The Carry-On Pro comes in the same size as The Carry-On but has a front pocket that can hold a laptop and zippered pockets. The only problem I have found with the Pro suitcases is the difficulty closing the front pocket, especially if I have it packed to maximum capacity. Both bags weight in at less than eight pounds, making them a good lightweight option.

The Carry-On Plus is larger and can be used to store more items. The Carry-On Pro Plus also has an exterior pocket that can store your laptop. Keep in mind, these option is slightly bulkier than a standard carry-on, with dimensions of 23" × 15" × 9.5". This may prevent it from fitting in overhead bins on small planes (i.e. most budget European airlines). The Carry-On Pro Plus is also the heaviest option in the Carry-On line, weighing in at 8.38 pounds, however. you do get 46L of packing space to work with by choosing the Pro Plus. If you choose the Carry-On Pro Plus, you're sure to get an arm workout lifting it into those overhead bins!

Monos Luggage's interior is lined with antimicrobial material, keeping you organized and clean. You will find plenty of pockets to organize your belongings. With a zippered panel on one side and a compression pad-held compartment on the other, Monos suitcases are all about compartmentalization, which is one of the things I love about this brand (and look for in all of my luggage purchases).

Monos Check-In Luggage

Two models are available in the standard Monos check-in luggage range.

The Check-In Medium is the perfect medium-sized bag, with a volume of 70L and dimensions of 26.5" × 18.5" × 10.5". This option is perfect for trips 7-21 days in length and can easily be used as a shared bag with you and your traveling partner!

The Check-In Large is a slightly larger bag that is perfect for traveling families or those jetting off around the world for months. This suitcase can hold 99.2L and has dimensions of 30" × 21" × 11". While this is a pretty big size for a checked bag, you will be able to pack anything you need for your getaway! I think the Check-In Large is the perfect size if you tend to be an over-packer like myself, or if you need to bring additional items for those longer trips.

The interior of both check-in models is designed similarly to the carry-on models. One side contains a zippered panel to keep loose items from shifting during travel, while the other side has ballistic nylon compression straps and a cover panel.

Monos Hybrid Luggage

The Monos Hybrid collection contains five sizes: Hybrid Carry-On, Hybrid Carry-On Plus (pictured below), Hybrid Check-In Medium, Hybrid Check-In Large and Hybrid Trunk.

The exterior of the hybrid models is made from a mix of aluminum and polycarbonate, combining the best aspects of both materials. The zippers on these models are replaced with two TSA-approved locks to ensure maximum security and an aluminum frame for extra support and durability. The Hybrid collection also features color matching for all components, even the handles and wheels. For those looking for that sleek, monochromatic look, these suitcases are absolutely perfect.

The Hybrid Carry-On has standard carry-on dimensions of 22" × 14" × 9", while the Hybrid Carry-On Plus is slightly larger, at 23" × 15" × 9.5".

The Hybrid Check-In Medium has dimensions of 26.5” x 18.5” x 10.5” and the Hybrid Check-In Large has dimensions of 30” x 21” x 11”. While all four of the hybrid suitcases have the same dimensions as the standard Monos bags for each respective size, the unique features of the Hybrid collection makes these luggages worth checking out!

Monos Hybrid Trunk

The Hybrid Trunk is a newer product to the Hybrid range and offers an aerospace-grade German polycarbonate shell that is water-resistant. The Hybrid Trunk also features an anonized aluminum frame and corner guards, providing extra protection for your suitcase while in transit. Designed without zippers, this luggage closes with two TSA locks and even has reinforced wheel housing to help with the extra weight in this larger travel bag. It seems that luxury luggage brand Rimowa may have some competition with Monos releasing a Hybrid Trunk, as it has similar features to Rimowa's trunk (at a much lower cost).

Monos vs Away - Which is better?

Away is another luggage brand that's gained popularity in recent years and has emerged as a competitor to Monos. After reviewing Away, I found that both suitcase brands have a similar design, with a polycarbonate shell and TSA locks. In addition, Away offers a 100-day free trial for all purchases, just like Monos. The one difference is that if you received free shipping with your Away purchase, you will be provided a prepaid label for the return.

Monos is great for its elegant yet simple design and many color options. It is also stronger and more durable. Away offers more luggage options, albeit some models have fewer color options. Additionally, Away’s carry-on models have an ejectable lithium battery option, with two USB charging ports. I know how difficult it can be to find a charging spot in busy airports, so the battery option may be one of Away's top design features for some travelers.

Ultimately, your preferences and requirements will determine which option you choose.

Benefits to owning a Monos Luggage

Monos has solved the problem of suitcases with handles that are adjustable yet wobbly. Monos suitcases have a telescopic handle that is extremely sturdy, with the release button located just under the handle. I think Monos luggage bags are very well constructed. With the durability this brand provides, it's clear these are suitcases that are made to last.

Monos offers reliable customer service and a limited lifetime warranty. According to their website, the warranty covers "any cracks or breaks in the shell, wheels, handles, or telescoping handles that break off or are no longer usable, and broken zippers." However, any cosmetic damage or normal wear and tear is not covered by the warranty.

Monos also offers a 100 day trial program. If you are unsatisfied with the product, you can return it to Monos, provided it's in original condition. I am a big fan of brands that offer a trial period - as with most online purchases, you don't know how your selection will work for you until you have it in your hands, so having the option to return within the generous 100 day window is reassuring.

But what are the drawbacks to Monos Luggage?

Many Monos suitcases come in light color options, making them more susceptible to attracting dirt and developing noticeable scratches or scuffs over time. This is one of the reasons I typically choose darker color options for my suitcases... but I have to admit, the light colors are stunning. The front pocket on a few Monos luggage styles is great in theory, but I have noticed that it does not expand as well as expected. However, the pocket still makes for a great spot to store smaller, thinner items.

Another drawback is the return policy. Monos offers a generous 100 day trial for any luggage and you can return it as long as it has not been used in transit. For all other products, Monos has a 30 day return policy. However, the cost of shipping your return is deducted from your total refund, which is a bummer. I think Monos could do better and offer to cover the cost of return shipping!

Monos Luggage is a great option for travelers looking for the best value, but it's not the most affordable. The prices for the suitcases range between $265 and $376. However, you can wait for the Monos bag sale to enjoy great discounts on your favorite Monos luggage. I have noticed that Monos does occasionally offer coupon codes throughout the year as well, so if you love the Monos look but want to save some cash, keep an eye out on their website for these coupons.

Travel Merak is all about budget-friendly travel solutions, but I do think you should spend a little more on a quality suitcase that will last you for at least 10-15 years, making it both durable and economical.

Monos on Trustpilot (Updated Feb 2023)

I found Monos on Trustpilot and out of 119 reviews, they have an "average" rating and 3.7/5 stars. While the company profile is unclaimed on Trustpilot, Monos does seem to have an even mix of both positive and negative reviews. Before buying from a brand I'm not familiar with, I like to look at rating sites like Trustpilot in addition to the company's website as I feel it gives a better understanding of what customers truly think of a brand.

monos trustpilot review black trustpilot logo green star, 3.7 star rating 119 reviews average rating

When looking at the reviews, 57% of reviewers gave Monos five stars while a surprising 32% gave Monos one star. I do read all reviews with a grain of salt as everyone's experience with any brand can vary. After reading some reviews, the reviewers giving five stars are extremely happy and satisfied with their purchases, which is a good sign for Monos.

A recent five star review stated "Ordered several luggage pieces over the past couple years for my family. Love the product, great quality. After a medium checkin piece was damaged by an airline who offered no remedy we contacted Monos. Within hours a replacement piece was on its way. Fantastic support, courteous, caring representatives. Well done!"

On the flip side, a reviewer that gave one star stated "they supposedly offer a 100 day trial, yet they charge their customers a $40 return shipping fee for a carry on, or more for a checked baggage! That is not acceptable. I have never in my entire life, paid a return shipping fee for anything when purchasing through a trial, especially from supposedly a premium brand! Their biggest competitor Away, offers a trial with free shipping and free returns."

Many of the negative reviews are regarding paying for return shipping or being unable to test the luggage while traveling during the 100 day return period. While I do understand the frustration, with some research, this information is available on their website. Is it convenient? No. Are there other brands that offer free returns? Yes. But I have yet to find a brand that allows you to "test" their suitcases while traveling and return them with no questions asked.

February 2023 Updated Trustpilot Rating

I decided to check back in with the Monos rating on Trustpilot to determine if there was any change since my initial review in 2022. To my surprise, the brand's rating increased to 4.0 stars out of 5 and is now categorized as "Great". An additional 179 reviews were added and out of those reviews, 67% now give the brand five stars while a combined 29% give the brand one or two stars. A few negative reviews have been added regarding Monos' customer service, however there has been many more positive reviews highlighting the brand's great luggage and giving feedback on great customer service experiences.

I am happy to see the brand's rating increase and perhaps if Monos decides to claim the Trustpilot profile and reach out to unsatisfied customers, they can improve their rating and build trust with their consumers.

Monos Luggage Review Final Thoughts

With a 4.6/5 rating on Travel Merak's scale, I think Monos Luggage is definitely a great choice if you are in the market for a new suitcase. With a variety of classic colors and sizes, coordinating accessories, and amazing quality and durability, Monos makes a perfect option for those looking for a suitcase built to last for years to come.

While Monos offers plenty of options including their Hybrid collection,  some travelers may be hesitant to take a risk with a relatively newer luggage brand. Brands like Tumi, Samsonite and Rimowa offer additional options and have well-known reputations for offering durable suitcases.
