Long gone are the days when you needed wired headphones to listen to music or movies on the go. Technology has vastly improved over the last decade, including Bluetooth integration on many devices, from headphones to keyboards and e-readers. These devices can be a lifesaver while traveling, especially on long flights, keeping you entertained with music, TV, or a good book.
You may be wondering, can I use these Bluetooth devices on my next flight? And more importantly, is it safe to do so? Let’s look at how you can safely use your Bluetooth devices on your next flight.
Since 2013, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has allowed the use of portable electronic devices in airplane mode during all phases of the flight, including takeoff and landing. While heavier items like laptops must be stowed during takeoff and landing, smaller devices like Bluetooth headphones, mobile phones, and e-readers may be used.
The FAA’s overall guidance for travelers is as follows:
What does this mean for Bluetooth devices like headphones? You may use them at any point, from gate to gate, so long as the airline you are traveling with does not prohibit use.
Bluetooth absolutely works in airplane mode. In my opinion, this is one of the most remarkable technological advances in travel and convenience in recent years. You can pair your Bluetooth device, such as headphones, to your phone or Bluetooth audio transmitter without needing a cellular or WiFi connection.
As you can see below, my Bose headphones are paired to my iPhone while in airplane mode and with WiFi turned off. I also have my Apple Watch connected via Bluetooth to my iPhone at all times, and it has never once disconnected, despite a lack of cellular service or WiFi.
Using Bluetooth with your phone in airplane mode is relatively simple, regardless of your phone type.
Bluetooth connectivity for a plane’s in-flight entertainment system is a relatively new technology. While you can connect your own wired headphones or use a Bluetooth transmitter, the vast majority of aircraft do not have Bluetooth connection capabilities. However, some airlines have rolled this feature out on select planes.
Etihad Airways and
Qatar Airways both offer Bluetooth connectivity on select flights and routes.
Meanwhile, for US-based airlines, only
United and Delta offer a Bluetooth connection option on select flights. Older models of airplanes do not have the technology to support a Bluetooth connection. However, as airlines upgrade and replace their older planes, we may see Bluetooth connectivity as a new travel industry standard in the coming years.
If your airline does not have Bluetooth capabilities yet, you can still use your headphones by purchasing a Bluetooth transmitter like the
AirFly Pro. This device connects to the 3.5mm audio jack on virtually all airlines with an in-flight entertainment system and pairs seamlessly with your Bluetooth headphones. The battery life on the AirFly Pro is over 16 hours, so that you can listen even on long-haul flights.

Apple AirPods are like any other Bluetooth listening device and can be used on an airplane. The exception to this is during takeoff and landing, as with any other Bluetooth device or electronics. However, each airline’s policy varies on whether you can use these during takeoff and landing, so be sure to verify with your airline before you fly.

There is not much published by any airlines I’ve researched outright banning Bluetooth devices such as Bluetooth headphones, a mouse, or a keyboard. Many business travelers or digital nomads may travel with a Bluetooth mouse/keyboard and utilize them on the plane to get some work done (although I personally haven’t seen anyone use them). Space is somewhat limited on planes unless you are traveling in business or first class, so using a Bluetooth mouse or keyboard is impractical.
However, the use of a Bluetooth speaker is prohibited. Any external sound devices may not be used on flights as they cause a disturbance to other passengers, so it is best to leave your speakers at home or packed in your luggage for use at your destination.
While domestic (US) airline policies are pretty lenient regarding Bluetooth use, international airlines vary. I’ve looked at some more popular international airlines to determine if/when you can use Bluetooth headphones.
Air Canada only allows Bluetooth headphones on flights equipped with WiFi.
According to their website, headphones can be used gate to gate. However, an
Air Canada response to a Twitter user’s question states they can only be used once the aircraft is at 10,000 feet.
In addition to Etihad and Qatar,
Emirates also allows Bluetooth device usage on its flights, and some planes, like the A380, are equipped with Bluetooth connectivity to their entertainment systems.
In general, the vast majority of airlines do allow Bluetooth device usage while in flight. Bluetooth headphones can be connected to the entertainment system on some flights, but you can use them with a personal device so long as it’s in airplane mode. And while these rules are applicable today, they could very well change. The European Commission (the European Union’s governing body) announced that by June 30, 2023, passengers traveling by air within the European Union would
no longer be required to switch their devices to airplane mode, as they will offer in-flight 5G and unrestricted mobile use. This brings some hope that other airlines with some Bluetooth restrictions will revamp their policies to allow connectivity during all phases of the flight.
As Bluetooth rules and connectivity options vary by airline, I’ve compiled a list of some of the most popular airlines worldwide. In my research, I reviewed each airline's Bluetooth policy to determine whether Bluetooth is permitted and, if so, what restrictions are in place. I also researched if Bluetooth headphones can be connected to the in-flight entertainment system (if applicable).
These rules are subject to change. Always follow cabin crew direction when it comes to using your personal electronic devices.

The Bose Quiet Comfort 45 headphones are top-of-the-line for travelers looking for over-ear headphones. With up to 24 hours of listening time, these headphones are perfect for any flight. The Quiet Comfort 45 are incredibly comfortable for over-ear headphones; personally, earbuds start to hurt my ears after a while, and I have been able to wear these headphones for several hours with no issue.
The active noise-canceling feature is excellent at blocking out sounds. You can even switch from Aware mode (allowing you to hear your environment) to Quiet mode (activating the full noise-cancellation feature) by using a button on the left headphone.

Apple’s AirPods Pro provides a sleek and stylish option for Bluetooth earbuds. Similarly to the Bose headphones, Apple AirPods can be used with the active noise cancellation feature or adaptive transparency when you want to hear external sounds (such as flight announcements). With the active noise cancellation feature, you can get up to 6 hours of listening time with the AirPods Pro (30 hours with the charging case).
The AirPods Pro comes with four silicone tips in different sizes to provide a secure seal and keep the earbuds in place, no matter your ear size.

The Powerbeats Pro are an excellent option for travelers looking for earbuds that will stay in place. The adjustable, secure ear-hooks provide stability and comfort and prevent these earbuds from falling out unexpectedly. The Powerbeats Pro has up to 9 hours of listening time, and the charging case (included in your purchase) provides more than 24 hours of additional charge/listening time.
These headphones are compatible with iOS and Android and are a cheaper alternative to Apple’s Airpods Pro.

Bluetooth devices are permitted on most airlines, so you should not run into any issues utilizing these throughout your travels. It never hurts to verify with your airline before your flight to be prepared for any scenario.
Some airlines may impose restrictions on Bluetooth devices for taxiing, takeoff, and landing or until you’ve reached a certain altitude. However, with recent technological advancements on board, more and more airlines are permitting the use of Bluetooth devices from gate to gate and even offer Bluetooth connectivity to their in-flight entertainment systems.
